Scripture Reference: Psalm 29:3-9
The voice of the Lord is more powerful than any problem we may ever experience. When the disciples were in the boat with Jesus and a very strong storm arose, they were terrified. They did not yet realize that the One in the boat with them has a voice that is more powerful than mighty waters.
In distress they woke up Jesus who was sleeping in the boat. “Lord, we are going to drown!” They were not prepared for what would happen next. With one word from the Lord, the sea grew completely calm –not a little calmer –but completely calm. Astonished they turned to each other and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and waves obey Him.”
All the powers of nature is subject to His voice because He is the Lord of all the earth. All things were created through Him and for Him: “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together“ (Colossians 1:16-17). That is the reason the winds and waves obeyed His voice.
The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the LORD thunders over the mighty waters.
The voice of the LORD is powerful;
the voice of the LORD is majestic.
In the same way, the Lord can strike down our troubles with one word from His mouth. His voice is more powerful than any force of nature. His voice can turn our desert-like fruitless life into a paradise. He has the power to lift up and to tear down. His voice brings joy to the hearts of the righteous. As we perceive His power in action in our lives, we too can cry with those in His temple: “Glory!”
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

You’re always welcome, Jerry and such an inspiration to me. Joining you in saying, “Glory!”
Fo’ Sho’! Whenever I’m broke and things get too tight and I’m scared out of my wits, I begin thinking about walking on water and what an amazing but scary thing that must have been. The water was moving all the time, so there was no sure footing, there were constantly changing hills and valleys which made it hard to plan the next step, then add the wind and rain and you have a downright awful situation. But when Peter kept his eyes on Jesus and didn’t get distracted by the physical realities around him, he walked fine; the Spirit guided his feet perfectly.
Notice the storm didn’t stop raging until they stepped into the boat though. I believe that’s because Jesus wanted Peter to experience the exhilaration of doing the “impossible” with Him. Also to realize it wasn’t possible without Him….
Thanks for the valuable insight, Jonny. Yes, I’ve had instances where the Lord did the ‘impossible’ during difficult times and although one desires to get out of the storm, upon reflection I really miss the special display of His powerful hand in that storm. I can so relate to the exhilaration of God’s “impossibles-made-possible”
Thank you for this post.
