Whoever claims to live in Him, must walk as Jesus did (1 John 2:6)
Contemplating the above Scripture inspired in me the question: How did Jesus walk? A sincere follower of someone, would evidently desire to learn more about the way that person walked (his way of doing) so that one may be able to follow that person’s example in the best and most informed way possible. So, too, it is with the followers of our Lord Jesus. We hunger to learn more about Him so that we may closely follow His Way of doing….the Way that leads to the Father.
As a result, I wanted to learn more about His walk. My list is by no means an exhaustive one, but I tried to focus on those characteristics of the Lord Jesus that really touched me; really stood out for me. I discuss them here and in following posts as of course, it is simply impossible to adequately describe the things our Lord did in a mere few words. As John wrote: “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” John 21:25.
So, then, how did Jesus walk?
- He went around doing good: “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and…He went around doing good…” (Acts 10:38).
- He walked with compassion: “When the Lord saw her, His heart went out to her and He said, ‘Don’t cry.’”(Luke 7:13).
- He placed His own needs second to the needs of others: “Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, He said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’ So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When the Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So He began teaching them many things.” (Mark 6:31-34). Although Jesus desired to be alone with His disciples and wanted them to get some rest and something to eat, He placed those desires second to the helplessness of the crowds that followed Him. When He saw them, He placed aside His own plans and helped the people instead. He appears to be in the habit of doing this so often, even to the point that His own family thought He has lost His mind: “Then Jesus entered a house and again a crowd gathered, so that He and His disciples were not even able to eat. When His family heard about this, they went to take charge of Him, for they said, ‘He is out of His mind.’” (Mark 3:20-21).
- He did not pander to the man-made ideas and commandments of the church of His day: “Jesus replied, ‘You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God. For you ignore God’s law and substitute you own tradition.” (Mark 7:6-8).
Just a closer walk with Thee…dear Lord, let it be
